Robert Christopher “Chris” Peele, age 34, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 10, 2017, at his home in Columbia.

Born in Laurinburg, NC, Christopher was the son of Wilma Thompson Peele Smith and the late Michael William “Mike” Peele. He grew up in Bennettsville and was active in the Boy Scouts, where he earned the Eagle Scout Award. He graduated from Marlboro County High School in 2001. He was a South Carolina Life Scholarship recipient and was listed in Who’s Who Among American High School Students. He attended Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, SC, and had a love for math and computer science. For the past 15 years he resided in Columbia, SC. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bennettsville.

Christopher was a loving son, grandson, brother, nephew, and cousin. He cherished his special relationship with his grandmother, Lib Thompson. He had impeccable manners and was always so appreciative of everything that was done for him. Christopher was very witty and had a dry sense of humor. He loved animals, especially cats, and volunteered at the Humane Society in Columbia.

Christopher is survived by his mother and step-father, Wilma and Ray Smith, Jr. of Bennettsville, SC; maternal grandmother, Lib Thompson of Bennettsville, SC; brother, Austin (Diane) Peele of Seneca, SC; aunt, Libby (Frank) Shutt of Bennettsville, SC; nephew, Wesley Montgomery of Seneca, SC; niece, Katelyn Peele of Seneca, SC; cousins, Ashley (Jeremy) Thompson of Saluda, NC and Lee Shutt of Bennettsville, SC; step-paternal grandmother, Lydia Smith of Bennettsville, SC; and step-sister, Raven (Hawk) Grooms of Bennettsville, SC.

Christopher was preceded in death by his father, listed above; maternal grandfather, Robert E. “Red” Thompson; and paternal grandparents, Howard and Ann Peele Ransom.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 20, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Bennettsville. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Gathering Room at the church.
