Johnny Calvin Freeman passed away Friday, January 3, 2020, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, NC. He was 67 years old.
Born December 24, 1952, in Bennettsville, he was a son of the late Henry Thomas Freeman, Jr. and Emma Louise Frazier Freeman.
Johnny was a 1972 graduate of Bennettsville High School and a 1979 graduate of Florence Darlington Technical College where he received his degree in Criminal Justice.
Johnny was most proud of the service he gave in the United States Army 82nd Airborne Division (1972 – 1975) where he held the E-8 position of PSNCO (Personnel Services Noncommissioned Officer) with the 82nd Military Intelligence Company, attached to the Pentagon, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Johnny also served again in 1976 as a Warrant Officer Candidate (WOC) at Fort Rucker, Alabama. During his military service, he was awarded the 82nd Airborne Division Distinguished Trooper Award, Vietnam War Medal and the US Army Good Conduct Medal. He was recommended for the Army Commendation Medal and was also selected as a Green Beret.
After his military service Johnny served as a police officer with the Aiken Police Department and later the Cheraw Police Department, where he was unfortunately disabled in the line of duty.
Johnny was of the Pentecostal faith and attended the Pentecostal Church of God as a child accepting Christ in adulthood. Through the years, he enjoyed coaching football with the Bennettsville Recreation Department and Bennettsville Middle School. Johnny was a “Master of all trades” and enjoyed riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle when his health permitted.
He was a devoted family man, loved spending time with his family and taking care of his dogs. He treasured the 48 years spent with the love of his life, Emily Candace Hood Freeman.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, listed above; sister, Teresa Ann Freeman Stubbs; brother, Donnie Ray Gainey; and infant brother, Henry Thomas Freeman, III; and special nephew, Timothy Edward Stubbs.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his wife, listed above; son, Gregory Freeman (Brandy Dudley); grandchild, Cameron Freeman; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and other beloved friends and family pet “Toto.”
A funeral service is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at Christian Fellowship Church, followed by burial at Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2020, at Burroughs Funeral Home.
