Nancy (Cottingham) Smith

December 4, 1934 ~ June 19, 2019 (age 84)

Nancy Cottingham Smith, 84, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Scotland Memorial Hospital in Laurinburg, NC.

Born December 4, 1934 in Clio, SC, she was a daughter of the late Donald Morrison and Margaret Doares Cottingham.  Mrs. Nancy was a graduate Clio High School and the Charlotte Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.  She returned to Clio in 1956 and married her high school sweetheart, Sonny Smith.  She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and served as a member of the choir and the Elizabeth McIntyre Women’s Circle, as well as several other committees.  Mrs. Nancy was the first female to serve of the Clio Rescue Squad. During her career she worked part time with Marlboro General Hospital, served as the school nurse in Clio, and retired as the facility nurse from the Oak River location of Mohawk Industries.

She is survived by:  her sons, Mike Smith and wife Missy of Bennettsville, and Steve Smith of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Cody Smith (Courtney), Adam Smith (Miles), Samuel Smith, Tylor Smith, Jamie Prevatte (J.P.), Blade Smith and William “Peanut” Smith; great-grandchildren, Hudson and Carter Smith, Mary Adalyn Smith, Jaiden Prevatte, Jaxsen Prevatte, Jordyn Prevatte, Drake Smith and Paisley Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above; her husband, Edward “Sonny” Smith; son, Richard D. Smith; daughter, Louanna Smith Beardmore; brother, Duck Cottingham; and sister, Carolyn McQuage.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 22, 2019 at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the committal to follow in Hebron Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at 307 Red Bluff Street, Clio, SC. 29525.
