Obituary

LAURINBURG, NC

On Tuesday, January 5, 2021, Mrs. Mildred R. Scharstein, age 97, passed away at Scotia Village in Laurinburg, NC. Formerly of Bennettsville, SC, Mrs. Scharstein had been a resident of Scotia Village since 2005.  Born in Ashland, KY, on January 19, 1923, Mrs. Scharstein was the youngest daughter of Augustus Edward and Bessie Hudgins Rice.

In 1943, Mildred graduated from Transylvania College with a bachelor’s degree in history. She greatly enjoyed her college years and was a proud member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. While a student at Transylvania, Mildred met Harry Scharstein, a handsome young man from Ft. Thomas, KY, who excelled at basketball and playing the trumpet. After graduating, Harry enlisted in the Navy.  Mildred taught school in Kentucky for several years before moving back home to live with her parents. She and Harry married in January 1945. Mildred then began her career as a wife and mother. She and Harry had five children: Harry Edward Scharstein, Esq., Pamela (Scharstein) Cenzer, Gregory Scharstein, R.N., Jeffrey Scharstein, M.D., and Robert Scharstein, M.D.

As a corporate executive’s wife, Mrs. Scharstein was instrumental in planning and supervising numerous family relocations as Harry furthered his career.  In each town in which she lived, Mildred was active in her children’s lives, their schools, her church, and the larger community. While living in Georgetown, KY, Mrs. Scharstein obtained her recertification in education and returned to teaching full-time.  She continued her teaching career after moving to Bennettsville and taught for a number of years before retiring.

Several years after the death of her husband, Mildred moved to Scotia Village where she made numerous friends and enjoyed many activities as an independent living resident.  She particularly relished playing bridge and swimming in Scotia’s indoor pool. More than anything, though, Mildred loved the visits she received from her devoted friends and clergy, children, grandchildren, and, eventually, her great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Scharstein was predeceased by her sisters, Maxine R. Jones and Ruby R. Smith. She was also predeceased by her beloved firstborn, Ed, in 1999, and by his widow, Terry Arazie Scharstein, in 2008.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Pam, and her husband, Doug, of Gainesville, FL; her son, Greg, and his wife, Jan, of Lexington, SC; her son, Jeff, and his wife, Wanda, of Darlington, SC, and Rob Scharstein of Charleston, SC.  Mrs. Scharstein is also survived by her beloved grandchildren: Mike Cenzer (Irena); Salter Scharstein; Lauren Scharstein (Dan); Harry Scharstein; Robert Scharstein; Jessica Hodges (Ben); Meredith Cenzer; Allison Aicher (Brian); Anna Minshew (Grey); Sam Scharstein, and Kris Scharstein.  She also leaves behind seven cherished great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express their profound gratitude to the staff of Scotia Village for the excellent care provided to Mildred during her long tenure there. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church (130 Broad St., Bennettsville, SC 29512) or to The Presbyterian Homes Foundation, Inc. (2109 Sandy Ridge Rd., Colfax, NC 27235; on the memo line, please designate Scotia Village’s “We Care” Award Program). Funeral plans are pending and will be announced at a later date.  Burroughs Funeral Home in Bennettsville, SC, is handling the arrangements.
